Radius Robotic System: Compact, Modular, Economic

Why the Radius Robotic System ?

The compact system size, its smart robotic kinematics and actuation technology considerably reduce complexity and cost of use. This is expected to facilitate training, accelerate adoption and provide a seamless change between both modalities; conventional and robotic procedures for the surgeon.

What is our approach ?

The key consideration is to downsize, lighten and simplify the technology through firstly, moving the actuators close to the operating field and secondly, using novel drive engineering.

What are the advantages ?

In the Radius Robotic System essential actuators are integrated into the surgical instrument itself, which is a robotized derivative of the proven R2 device family. This reduces the need to actuate the system by means of posteriorly arranged motors and drives and, therefore reduces mass and size.

System benefits

Open human-machine interface

Radius Robotic System's solution resembles the movement of the arm, using the delicate dexterity of the fingers for fine instrumental tip operation.

Advantage

The human-machine interface configuration and the resulting system operation comes closer to the way laparoscopic instruments are guided.

R2 device technology

The functional design of our proprietary R2 devices has concentric mechanical translating units, saving space in the instrument shaft.

Advantage

R2 instrumentation has 5 mm diameter with excellent force and torque transmission therefore being compatible with current standards in laparoscopy.

OR integration

The human-machine interface and the operator’s unit is so designed in an open manner which allows the user to have a complete overview of the operation scenario, enabling a direct view of the patient and medical personnel.

Advantage

The motion control is based on the philosophy to use the natural movements of the hand arm system and to transfer its movements to the instruments instinctively.

Control unit

The control unit allows a flexible and ergonomic working position in both a sitting and standing manner.

Robotic unit

The robot unit is designed in a multi-platform configuration which offers flexibility in positioning at the OR table due to the slim and lightweight design    of the individual components.

Surgical instruments

Pneumatic actuators inside the R2 Radius Robotic System device control deflection, tip activation and rotation of the surgical shaft and tip.

Endoscopic imaging

The endoscopic camera, like the other instruments, is guided by one of the robotic arms.

How is the Radius Robotic System different?

  • We are convinced that a market need in surgical robotics is to significantly reduce the space required by an assistance system.
  • The Radius Robotic System features a revolutionary kinematic design and breakthrough drive technology which has already been proven in a system demonstrator.
  • The innovative use of pneumatic drive further reduces the size of the unit and makes the Radius Robotic System one of the slimmest laparoscopic robotic systems currently being developed.
